Fruity Fridays

Through our School Council, the children have suggested that we try and set up a ‘Healthy Tuckshop’ formorning breaktimes. Now, in response to this, thanks to the support of Yatton’s Co-operative store, we will beproviding the opportunity for children to purchase a piece of fruit from a stall set up in our school playgroundeach Friday morning. This will be starting, on a trial basis, from Friday 4th March.

To make it easier and fairer for everyone, all pieces of fruit or fruit portions will be priced at 20p and eachperson will be rationed to one item only. If your child would like to buy from the stall, please send them withthe correct change – thank you.The stall will be run by Jenny from the Co-op store, assisted by school staff or Y6 volunteers. Children will beable to choose from a wide selection of fruit: apples, bananas, pears, clementines, nectarines, strawberries, grapes, pineapple pieces, blackberries and kiwi fruit. The choice may vary from week to week and the selectionmay be changed when we get a clearer idea of demand.

We are extremely grateful to the Co-operative for setting up this initiative with us. For the moment at least, they are willing for us to keep the proceeds of the fruit stall as long as the money goes towards the funding offarm visits and activities educating children about where their food comes from. ‘From Farm to Fork’ is a Co-operative initiative giving primary school children learning experiences to help them discover more about foodand to make informed, healthy choices. Both the Infant and Junior Schools are in the process of exploring thebest ways we can access the ‘From Farm to Fork’ programme for the benefit of the children.

Also, staff from the Co-operative will be visiting the school next week to talk to the children about Fairtrade. The visit may involve the children being offered a small, free sample of Fairtrade chocolate and/or fruit. If you would rather your child did not receive the sample, please let your child’s class teacher know by the end of this week. Thank you.
