Key Stage 2 - Years 3-6

At the start of Year 3,  your child will begin the National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Key Stage 2.  These cover the same core and foundation subjects as Key Stage 1 plus Modern Foreign Languages.

Compulsory national curriculum subjects at KS2 are:

  • English
  • maths
  • science
  • design and technology
  • history
  • geography
  • art and design
  • music
  • physical education (PE), including swimming
  • computing
  • ancient and modern foreign languages (at key stage 2)

Schools must provide Religious Education (RE) but parents can ask for their children to be taken out of the whole lesson or part of it.

We also teach PSHE (personal, social and health education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education. Health Education and Relationships Education (primary) becomes compulsory in all primary schools from September 2020.

See Year Group pages for more specific information on what the children will be learning term by term and Subject Pages for more information on the different curriculum areas.

Homework tasks are given to children in all year groups  in KS2 most weeks .

Children in Year 3 go swimming at Strode Centre in Clevedon. One class goes weekly (currently Thursday afternoons) in the Autumn Term, one in the Spring Term and one in the Summer Term. Parents will be notified of the specific dates when it is their children's turn to go.

Assessment

We believe that effective assessment can drive improvements in learning for all learners. In the school we use a mixture of both summative and formative assessment to help us to support and challenge learners.

Our assessments:

  • Give reliable information to parents about how their child, and their child’s school, is performing
  • Help drive improvement for pupils and teachers
  • Make sure the school is keeping up with external best practice and innovation

The most important assessment of learning for our learners is in the feedback we give day-to-day in a variety of ways, both orally and in writing.

Yatton Church of England Junior School engages with other schools within the Lighthouse Schools Partnership in moderation sessions on assessment from Year 3 to Year 6, working with colleagues  to ensure consistency and sound judgements. In house writing moderation also happens regularly.

National Tests and assessments: Key Stage 2

Your child will take national tests in May when they reach the end of key stage 2. These test your child’s skills in:

  • English reading
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Maths

The tests last less than 4 hours. You’ll get the results in July.

The school will send you the results of your child’s tests and teacher assessments.

Children’s overall Writing and Science are teacher-assessed.
